for COMM 351: Writing for Advertising Industry

1. Overview

For COMM 351, our team developed an integrated advertising campaign concept for Titan Confidence Lab, a proposed CSUF service designed to help students build confidence in public speaking and presentations.

Centered on the creative strategy “Picture Yourself,” the campaign encouraged students to visualize themselves as confident speakers before important moments such as class presentations, interviews, and group pitches. I developed the campaign's creative concept and designed the print advertisement, ambient advertisement, visual mockups, and final pitch presentation.

2. Audience & Challenge

Public speaking can be intimidating for college students, especially when preparing for presentations or speaking in front of unfamiliar audiences. Titan Confidence Lab was proposed as a private practice space where CSUF students could rehearse presentations and receive peer feedback before high-pressure speaking situations.

Our advertising challenge was to communicate the value of the proposed service in a way that felt approachable, encouraging, and relevant to students who might hesitate to seek help. Rather than focusing on their nervousness, we wanted the campaign to highlight what students could gain: greater confidence in themselves and their ability to communicate.

3. My role

As a main member developing Creative Concept, Copyrighting & Advertising Design, my contributions included:

  • Developing the “Picture Yourself” creative concept connecting public-speaking practice with confidence and personal growth.

  • Designing the print advertisement intended for The Daily Titan.

  • Writing the print headline and campaign tagline.

  • Developing the ambient mirror advertisement featuring a QR-code sign-up call to action.

  • Creating visual mockups demonstrating how the advertisements could appear in campus environments.

  • Designing the final campaign pitch presentation and presenting the creative rationale, audience insight, and media choices.

4. Strategy

  • Picture Yourself - Visualizing Confidence

The creative strategy centered on a simple idea: help students imagine the confidence they could gain before asking them to take action. The campaign focused on the desired outcome - feeling prepared, capable, and confident when speaking in front of others.

  • Connecting the Message to the Medium

We connected the print and ambient advertisements through recurring mirror imagery, motivational copy, and a consistent visual identity. The print advertisement introduced the idea of practicing confidence, while the ambient advertisement transformed that message into an interactive experience.

Both executions incorporated QR-code calls to action intended to connect students with the proposed service.

5. Execution

A. Print Ad - The Daily Titan

Headline: Practice Confidence Before It Counts

Tagline: Nerves In. Confidence Out.

Call to Action: Scan to reserve now!

I designed a print advertisement intended for The Daily Titan, CSUF's student newspaper.

The headline encourages students to prepare before important speaking moments, while the tagline contrasts nervousness with the confidence they hope to develop.

The mirror imagery reinforces the campaign's “Picture Yourself” concept by encouraging readers to imagine themselves experiencing that transformation.

B. Ambient Ad - Campus Mirrors

Headline: Confidence looks good on you!

Call to Action: QR-code sign-up

For the ambient execution, I designed an interactive mirror advertisement intended for high-traffic campus locations, including the Pollak Library and Titan Student Union.

By turning an everyday object into an interactive advertising touchpoint, the execution aims to make the campaign message memorable while encouraging students to engage with the idea of public-speaking confidence.

The mirror format also creates an opportunity for students to photograph and potentially share the experience through social media.

C. Mockups for Promotional Tactics

Beyond the individual advertisements, I designed the final campaign presentation to communicate the concept, visual identity, and relationship between the selected media.

The team pitch also outlined additional proposed promotional tactics, including a campus pop-up booth and social media content to extend awareness of Titan Confidence Lab.

6. Results

As an academic advertising proposal, Titan Confidence Lab was not presented as a launched campaign with measured audience results. The project produced:

  • An integrated creative concept connecting two advertising formats through one central message.

  • A completed print advertisement and Daily Titan placement mockup.

  • An interactive ambient advertisement concept with campus placement mockups.

  • Original advertising headlines, a campaign tagline, and QR-code calls to action.

  • A final campaign pitch communicating the creative rationale and proposed promotional approach.

The campaign was designed to increase awareness of Titan Confidence Lab, encourage student participation, and make public-speaking practice feel more approachable.

7. Reflection

Developing Titan Confidence Lab helped me understand how advertising can connect a practical service with an emotional benefit.

Through the “Picture Yourself” strategy, I learned to look beyond what a product or service offers and consider how audiences might feel after experiencing it.

Designing the print and ambient advertisements also taught me that the same creative message can work differently across media. While the print ad encouraged students to imagine confidence, the mirror installation allowed them to visualize it in a more personal way.

This project strengthened my appreciation for purposeful copywriting, audience-centered creative decisions, and the importance of connecting strategy with execution. It reminded me that effective advertising isn't simply about attracting attention — it's about giving people a reason to see themselves in the message..
