1. Overview
As a Communications Intern at Family Promise of Orange County (FPOC), a nonprofit supporting families facing homelessness, I contributed to the organization's social media communications through branded content, short-form videos, and fundraising campaign materials. My work included developing recurring content templates and creating social media assets for the Help Them Home fundraising campaign.
2. Audience & Challenge
FPOC's social media needed to communicate its mission, share community needs, recognize supporters, and promote opportunities for engagement. The audience includes (1) families with at least one child under 18 years old and (2) current or potential supporters & donors.
Working with sensitive subject matter also required thoughtful decisions about messaging and visuals to respect the confidentiality and dignity of the families the organization serves.
3. My role
As a Communications Intern ā Marketing & Social Media, my responsibilities included:
Developing branded templates for recurring social media content.
Creating carousel graphics, short-form Reels, and event promotions.
Adapting social media trends to the organization's communication needs.
Preparing and publishing assigned campaign posts according to scheduled dates.
Revising captions and visuals with client confidentiality in mind.
4. Strategy
Building Consistency Through Content Pillars
FPOC's recurring content pillars provided a structure for sharing different types of messages throughout the week. I developed templates for these pillars to help maintain a consistent visual identity while accommodating different stories, updates, and calls to action.
Supporting a Time-Sensitive Campaign
Alongside regular social media content, I developed assets for the Help Them Home fundraising campaign during April. This work required balancing scheduled campaign communications with FPOC's ongoing content, while adapting graphics and videos to specific messages.

7. Reflection
Working in nonprofit communications taught me that engaging content requires more than attractive visuals or popular trends.
A message also needs to serve the organization's purpose, respect the people represented, and give audiences a meaningful reason to engage. Through recurring content and fundraising campaign work, I developed a better understanding of how creativity, consistency, and responsibility can work together in social media communications.
Iām so grateful for Riley Cherry who has supervised and supported me so much during this internship. I have learned so much from her professionalism and dedication to her work for the organization.
